On 4 May 2026, an official decree announced that General Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition, would assume direct responsibility for the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs. This decision followed the death of General Sadio Camara, who was killed during a terrorist attack on the Kati military base in late April. Supported by General Oumar Diarra, appointed as Deputy Minister, this direct assumption of responsibility is intended to ensure continuity of military command and strengthen the country's leadership amid an increasingly volatile security environment.
