The Strategic Challenges of Satellite Internet in Africa

This programme explores the risks associated with the expansion of satellite internet providers such as Starlink, particularly regarding technological dependence and digital sovereignty. It highlights that the high cost of equipment — between US$200 and US$400 for a terminal, with monthly subscription fees ranging from US$30 to US$110 — places these services beyond the reach of much of the population. The programme also underlines the potential impact on African telecommunications operators, which collectively generate more than US$30 billion in annual tax revenues. Finally, the Africa CEO Forum recommends adopting a hybrid model combining satellite infrastructure with traditional internet service providers in order to: secure data; preserve public revenues; reduce prices for end users.
